If you have signed up for a dance class in Toronto, you are probably feeling a lot of different things. No matter what type of dance you are learning, from ballet and tap or modern and hip-hop, you may be wondering what to expect. It is normal to be nervous before you start taking a class – we’ve all been there! Even if the other people don’t seem nervous, they were at one point and they understand where you are coming from – so give yourself a break.
If you are nervous about taking a dance class in Toronto, here are a few things you should know beforehand:
Know The Kind of Lesson You Are Taking
There are a few different types of lessons available to people. The primary kind is in a group setting, where you are with up to 50 other people. Most classes range from a size of 10-20 people. If this doesn’t sound like something that you are interested in, you may also seek out one-on-one dance classes in Toronto. This will allow you to get personalized attention – which is great if you have something like a wedding or performance coming up.
If you do a group session, you may want to get there early. This will allow you to get a spot in the front of the room so that you can clearly see the instructor.
Make Sure You Read The Class Description
Some classes will be faster-paced than others. Most sessions will last from between 45 minutes to two hours, and there is a lot to learn. However, beginner classes tend to be slower-paced (and shorter) than others.
Most classes you sign up for will list a description of the level, timeline, and pace so that you can choose one that is good for you. While signing up for a harder class may seem like a good idea, you may end up just getting lost in the shuffle. You have to be a judge of your own skills.
Be Open To Failing
Learning a specific dance requires you to learn movements, terminology, music, and so much more. There are just so many different things that you need to know – if you can get a knowledge base before going, that would be best. However, it isn’t necessary.
You have to go into your class with an open mind and you have to be willing to fail. If you don’t fail, you will never learn about what you are supposed to do. Sometimes, doing something wrong will teach you how to do it right. You will never be perfect, but you can have a lot of fun trying to get there.
Go In With A Goal
In any type of class you go into, whether it is a dance class or a pottery class, you want to go into it with a goal. Whether that goal is simply to let go for an hour or so or if it is to pick up a new skill, you need to go in with a goal. Don’t compare your goals to anyone else’s, as most people go in with a different idea of what they want. Set targets for every class that you take and be realistic about what you can achieve.
Mostly, have fun. Remember that while some people do this for competition or for their careers, you are probably going to do it for some exercise and some relaxation. Treat it as such!
